In San Diego, homeless youth are finding hope through music
SAN DIEGO – For many young people experiencing homelessness, finding a sense of purpose and belonging can be a challenge. But in San Diego, a local organization is using music as a tool to help these individuals find hope and community.
You Matter, a program run by the non-profit Traveling Stories, provides free music lessons to homeless youth in the area. Through partnerships with local music schools and businesses, the program offers a safe and supportive environment for young people to explore their musical talents and express themselves.
Program coordinator Lisa Loveless says that music can be a powerful tool for healing and empowerment. “Many of these young people have experienced trauma and hardship in their lives,” she explains. “Music gives them a way to channel their emotions and connect with others who share their struggles.”
One participant in the program, a teenager named Javier, says that music has changed his life. “I never thought I could play an instrument or write a song,” he says. “But now, I feel like I have a voice and a purpose.”
You Matter is just one example of the innovative ways that organizations in San Diego are working to support homeless youth. By harnessing the power of music, these programs are helping young people in need find hope and a sense of belonging in their communities.
